Picturesque town in the middle of the Netherlands
Rhenen
It is no coincidence that even Rembrandt van Rijn portrayed the beautiful Rhenen in one of his paintings. Rhenen shines towards you from every angle.
From the bridge over the Rhine, the characteristic Cuneratoren towers as a landmark above the historic village center. A history that goes back many centuries: Rhenen already received city rights in 1258. Rhenen gained a royal touch through King Frederick of the Palatinate, who kept his summer residence there. The current “Frederik van de Paltshof” in the center of Rhenen still recalls this period.
In more recent history during World War II, the Battle of the Grebbeberg was fought near Rhenen in May 1940. While walking through Rhenen and across the Grebbeberg, the military cemetery invites reflection on the battle fought and the freedom regained. The annual national Remembrance Day and the Liberation Festival in nearby Wageningen are valuable traditions that have been honored for generations.
