Buytenplaets Rhenen
The “forest like a warm scarf”

Remmerstein Estate

The original Remmerstein manor was destroyed in the 15th century. Since then, the estate has had a rich and varied history. Today, the estate is owned by the Philipse family and their descendants.

About the estate

The current manor house was built by Mr. M.C. Philipse in 1912 as a wedding gift for Louise van Hoytema. She expressed her wishes for the location of the house: “a house where the forest rests like a warm scarf around my neck.” This wish is still tangible in every aspect of the estate today. The love of the forest and the use of wood is one of the key elements reflected in the manor house and its surrounding gardens. Mr. Philipse was trained as a forester and passed this passion on to the next generations. In the development of Buytenplaets Rhenen next to Remmerstein Estate, this warm green scarf and the loving use of the forest and its wood are fully honored.
